However, there are many other complex procedures which are done by dentists in specialized fields.In the United States, Canada and Australia there are ten different dental specialties that are recognized. A dentist must graduate from an advanced training program in order to be qualified in any of the specialty areas. The ten different specialties include the following:
- Public Health - Dentists in this area focus on epidemiology and social health.
- Endodontics - These dentists specialize in root canal therapy and disease that affect the dental pulp.
- Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology - This is the study, diagnosis and treatment of oral and maxillofacial related diseases.
- Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology - These dentists specialize in the interpretation of radiologic images of oral and maxillofacial disease.
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery - Dentists in this field specialize in extractions, facial surgery and implants.
- Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics - These dentists are specialists in the area of teeth straightening and the modification of midface and mandibular growth.
- Anesthesiology - These dentists study how to use local and general anesthesia techniques to relieve pain associated with the mouth.
- Periodontics - Dentists in this field focus on the study and treatment of periodontium disease along with the placement and maintenance of dental implants.
- Pediatric Dentistry - Those who specialize in dentistry for children.
- Prosthodontics - Those who specialize in dentures, bridges and restoring implants.
